With nearly 50 criminal cases against his name, Sapola was considered one of the most ruthless dacoits the ravines ever had produced. He was known for his brutality.

DIG (Range) Daljeet Chowdhary told HT over phone the entire region around Barech belt was being combed to track down other gangs members who escaped in course of the encounter.

The encounter ensued on the banks on the Chambal, where the gang had camped to execute mass kidnapping. The police were tipped off about their presence and soon DIG Chowdhary, SSP Etawah Ram Kumar entered the ravines with a team of the Special Operation Group around 3 am on Wednesday.

The gang was spotted on the fringes of the Bharech village as the police team closed in. A member on guard noticed the movement and alerted the entire gang.

The gang members jumped into the river and opened fire in an attempt to escape from the scene.

The firing lasted for nearly half-an-hour and the police later found the body of Sapola.

The police also found a .315 bore factory made rifle and .12 bore double barrel gun lying near the body. The DIG announced out of turn promotions to the SOG personnel involved in the encounter.
