Om Prakash advocated reservation based on economic basis, saying it would foster social unity. Former Allahabad University executive council member Vijay Kumar Sinha said HRD Minister Arjun Singh’s proposal was motivated by the desire for political gain.

Those present on the occasion were Sangam Lal Pandey, Om Prakash Dwivedi, Vimal Pandey, Subhash Mishra, Abhay Ojha, Laxmi Shankar Mishra, Noor Bhai Ullah, Munna Singh, Mukesh Tiwari and Satish Singh among others.

Meanwhile, students opposing reservation burnt a token effigy of pro-reservationists under the leadership of AU Students’ Union vice-president Brijendra Mishra here on Monday. The students later held a meeting at the AUU hall.Addressing students at the meeting, Mishra criticised the irrational action taken by pro-quota students in the name of reservation. He said such acts could lead to social unrest.

Pro-quota students painted their faces and staged a demonstration at the Allahabad University Union hall on Monday.

Lawyers have criticised the move to reserve seats in educational institutions, too.
