Renowned musician from Goa Remo Fernandes saidon Wenesdaythathe has decided not to participate in the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) this year protesting government's lack of interest in providing basic amenities to the people of the state while spending huge amounts to make IFFI a grand success.

Remo, who had performed last year at the IFFI, said "I cannot appreciate the spending of crores on superficial face-lifts which get washed away with the first rains while so many serious issues need urgent tackling in Goa. Let those who are able to enjoy such discrepancies enjoy the festival. I'd rather stay at home."

"I gave away the full earnings of last year to a charitable educational and health institutions as a sign of protest," Remo said.

Remo said he was invited to be a general body member together with filmmakers Shekhar Kapoor, Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai this year and was also offered to compose and perform the theme song at the opening ceremony but he declined.

"I am not protesting against IFFI. However, the harder the government works towards making IFFI a success, more clearly it shows us how little it works on the people's basic essential needs.

"Our schools have broken benches and windows, hospitals have filthy sheet covered in the previous patient's blood while the Inox multiplex in its luxury works in air conditioned and carpeted and lush efficiency," Remo said.
