Renovation turns PGI into ?free fall? tower

THE SANJAY Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS) may not be held directly responsible for Satyaprakash Singh’s death.

But the administration may have facilitated his act through the ongoing renovation.
One by one, over the last three months, modular aluminum windows with no mesh and no grill have been replacing the original had glass windo on hinges as first layer, an iron grill and finally an iron mesh.
The new modular windows panels have no grill.
Each panel now has a single window on hinges.
“The modular windows are replacing all original windows in the seven-storey hospital tower.
As a result, the hospital tower is becoming a ‘free-fall’ tower, and this is only the first incident,” observed a PGI doctor during the lunch hour at the ongoing conference of gastroenterology.
“Yes, it’s true that one may jump off any high rise building, but the PGI hospital tower has turned too likely for persons with a suicidal tendency.”
“Satyaprakash, who was in a depressed state of mind, got down from the bed, opened the window panel, climbed the ledge and jumped to his death,” said a cop on duty on the case.
Once again, ongoing renovation work at the SGPGIMS has come under severe criticism. Earlier, in a major fire that broke out in the hospital tower, the new windows left minimal scope for ventilation with failure of the air-conditioning system. But earlier too, the issue was raised at the general body meeting three months ago where some members complained to the State Government that the renovation works was unwarranted.
The SGPGIMS administration, however, continued with the work and the State Government did not interfere. This despite the fact, that Rs 9 crore given by the State Government for repairs is going into making mere cosmetic changes.
