Opposing the resolution, Hukum Singh (BJP) queried about the basis of the recommendation and whether it was backed by any survey.
He said it was against the spirit of the Constitution to provide reservation based on religion and sought to know who moved the resolution, the Samajwadi Party or the government.
Dubbing the move is a ploy to garner Muslim votes, Singh claimed there were no caste system among Muslims and Christians. He urged the government to review and reconsider the resolution as it would further divide society.
Advocating reservation on the basis of economic conditions and not on caste or community lines, he said education was the right of one and all and there should not be any bias. He said the Mulayam Government had introduced reservation in minority and other institutions to grab minority votes.
BJP stages walkout: BJP members staged a walkout in Vidhan Sabha during the Question Hour when the government refused to accept its demand of bringing Sanskrit Vidyalaya under the purview of the Kanya Dhan Yojna.
Dr Narendra Singh Gaur (BJP), said students of Urdu Vidyalaya were covered under the scheme but not those of Sanskrit Vidyalaya.
In his replying, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Azam Khan said minority institutions and not Urdu Vidyalaya students were covered under the Kanya Dhan Yojna and denied the facility to Sanskrit Vidyalaya. This prompted the BJP members to stage a walkout.
