Parmindar Singh, a Chiranjiv Vihar resident, went to a restaurant in sector 38A on August 23, 2009. He received a bill of R507 in which an Aquafina bottle had been charged at R40 while the MRP was R13. When he pointed it out to the restaurant staff, he was told that it is the charge levied by them for mineral water.

The restaurant staff also abused Singh. The District Consumer Forum observed that the restaurant was guilty of charging more than the MRP.

It directed the restaurant to pay a R3,000 penalty to the complainant and a refund of the extra R27 he was charged. They were further asked to pay R1,000 for legal expenses and R1,000 for the inconvenience caused.
