The traffic police has identified about 26 ‘Black Spots’, which were supposed to be highly accident prone, due to improper road conditions and erratic traffic.
However, despite taking several corrective measures, checks could not be maintained over the growing number of accidents and deaths in accident-prone areas.
According to records of the traffic police, during the past five years, the highest number of 38 accidents took place at Ramadevi crossing, in which 40 persons died because of serious injuries.
The Tat Mill crossing witnessed 28 accidents and the death of 29 persons in these.
On GT Road near Naramau, 26 accidents were registered in which 26 persons lost their lives. Similarly, at Jajmau Bima crossing, 26 persons were killed in 25 road accidents following fatal injuries.
Police reports said that the road from Ghantaghar to Zarib Chowki, Nayapul to Afim Kothi, the VIP road and Civil Lines were also not safe. Irregular truck traffic and wrong side parking and the blind turns on these roads were the main causes of accidents.
The traffic police has suggested municipal authorities to raise speed breakers on roads and to put up warning and speed check boards along the road sides especially in accident-prone areas.
However, the police feels that unless commuters and drivers were aware of traffic rules and they followed them, cases of accidents could not be contained only by efforts of the Police and the Municipal Corporation.
