General Surayud Chulanont, a respected retired army officer and advisor to Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej, was chosen by the military junta to be the country's interim prime minister, local media reported on Sunday, ahead of the official announcement.
Top generals of the armed forces overthrew the caretaker government of Thaksin Shinawatra in a bloodless coup on September 19, but vowed to quickly turn over administrative power to civilian rule and establish a process to draft a new constitution.
