Yadav was gunned down near a bridge at Parmadih village in Buxar district at around 1.30 am while he was returning to Bhabhua, headquarter town of Kaimur district, District Magistrate Rashid Ahmed Khan said.

Yadav was returning after participating in a party convention in Patna on Friday, the official said.

Khan said the assailants had thrown nails near the bridge which pierced the tyres of the slain leader's vehicle.

As he got down, the assassins sprayed him with bullets one of which hit the abdomen. He died on the spot, Khan said adding "it appears like a pre-planned murder."
