THE KANPUR Dehat police today arrested eight members of a bank robbers? gang and recovered Rs 3.4 lakh in cash and four motorcycles besides firearms from their possession. Police sources said the gang members during their preliminary interrogation had confessed their involvement in several cases of bank robbery. These included robberies committed at PNB, Jhijhak branch on February 14; PNB, Jhunsi branch on June 6; and at Panki branch of Bank of Baroda on August 25, 2006.

Police sources said the gang members during their preliminary interrogation had confessed their involvement in several cases of bank robbery. These included robberies committed at PNB, Jhijhak branch on February 14; PNB, Jhunsi branch on June 6; and at Panki branch of Bank of Baroda on August 25, 2006.
The arrested robbers were identified as Anurag Pandey of Rura, Santosh Tiwari of Itawah, Prashant Shukla of Unnao, Pankaj Tiwari of Bharthna, Mukesh Kumar of Itawah, Omvir of Itwah, Pramod Awasthi of Rashoolabad and Prashant Awasthi of Rasoolabad. Two others identified as Jaiprakash Rajput and Vimal Shukla of Aurraiya managed to flee from the spot.
The police party, which busted the gang, was headed by ASP Mahesh Mishra and included CO, Bhoganipur Laxmi Niwas Mishra and the Akbarpur police station incharge. The team that was especially constituted to work out robbery cases raided a spot near Sengar River under Akbar police area following a tip-off about the gang.
Later, IG (zone) Rizwan Ahmad and DIG Daljit Singh Chaudhary announced rewards of Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 for the police team.
