Unmindful of the sudden rain and chilly winter winds, the royal bahus are stepping out in the muddy, narrow village roads in the state's Patiala district to campaign for Captain Amarinder Singh and his son Raninder.
State Congress chief and former chief minister Amarinder, contesting from Patiala (Urban), is a veteran of several campaigns. So, young Raninder is getting all the attention of his mother, Patiala MP and minister of state for external affairs Preneet Kaur, and his wife, Reshma Kaur, both anxious to ensure his victory from Samana.
Preneet, who is usually the campaign in-charge of Captain's seat, Patiala Urban, has deputed her daughter, Jai Inder Kaur, to look after the seat so she can devote maximum time to Samana.
Her daughter-in-law Reshma Kaur is the campaign in-charge of Samana town. "Vote for my husband for a better future for the coming generation and overall development of the city," Reshma tells voters, moving door to door in Samana where Raninder is facing the SAD's Surjit Singh Rakhra, a strong contender. She holds eight to ten meetings in different areas, and likes to engage small groups of people.
While she is busy campaigning in Samana town, Preneet is canvassing for her son in the constituency's villages. "It is hectic but I am managing both seats, apart from seven other assembly segments of my Parliament seat," said the Patiala MP.
"(My campaigning in) Patiala seat (Amarinder's constituency) is almost through," she said. "I visit the seat in evening hours, but my maximum thrust is at Samana, as I wanted that we should cover the entire consistency of Raninder by January 23. Then I will again shift to Patiala."
In Patiala Urban, Preneet tells voters that her husband effectively governed the state in his last tenure as CM. "Elect him again so that Punjab gets back on the fast track of progress," she says. In Samana, she seeks votes on her son's behalf, saying: "Captain sahib is going to play a vital role in the next government, so vote for Raninder to get a direct link to the next government and overall development."
Meanwhile, Jai Inder Kaur, who has come in specially from Delhi to pitch in for her father's campaign, said: "I personally meet city Congress workers who the are the backbone of the party and working tireless to increase the margin of Captain Singh's victory."
