An engineering student tried to commit suicide by slitting his wrists, in Janakipuram, on Tuesday. His friends said he was upset after college authorities rusticated him for his alleged involvement in a brawl on the college campus around a month ago.

The victim has been identified as Shiva Pandey, 24, of Rai Bareli. He was undergoing treatment in the trauma centre of King George’s Medical University and his condition was said to be critical till reports last came in.

Pandey was pursuing B Tech part III from an engineering college on Sitapur Road and was staying in a rented house in Jankipuram for the past three years. According to reports, the victim slit the nerves of his left hand when he was alone in his house on Tuesday morning.

His roommate Hemant later spotted him lying in a pool of blood and rushed him to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to the KGMU trauma centre.

Doctors say the victim has suffered major blood loss and is critical. Pandey’s friends alleged that the college administration took action against him without allowing him to give a proper explanation about his role in the brawl between two student groups.

They say he even approached the administration several times requesting them to revoke his rustication but his request was turn down. According to his friends, Pandey took the extreme step fearing that the rustication would spoil his career.

District police spokesman Alok Pathak confirmed that the student has been admitted in trauma centre. He however said no complaint has been registered with the police so far. No suicide note was found at the scene.
