Wayne Arthurs and Chris Guccione won reverse singles matches on Sunday to complete a 5-0 Australian victory over Belarus in a Davis Cup quarterfinal at Kooyong.
Arthurs, 35, beat Serguei Tarasevitch 7-6 (8/6), 6-2 in a match that would have featured Lleyton Hewitt and Max Mirnyi, the No 1 players for each country, if Australia had not clinched the quarterfinal on Saturday.
In the other reverse singles match outdoors on Rebound Ace, Guccione beat another Belarus backup player, Alexandr Zotov, 6-1, 6-3, clinching the 44-minute match with an ace. Zotov was subbing for Vladimir Voltchkov.
Arthurs and Paul Hanley outlasted Mirnyi and Voltchkov 3-6, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in doubles Saturday to give Australia an unbeatable 3-0 lead.
On Friday, Guccione beat Mirnyi in nearly four hours, winning the marathon five-setter 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
Hewitt, playing for the first time at Kooyong, easily beat Voltchkov 6-2, 6-1, 6-2. Advancing to the semifinals for the fifth time in eight years, Australia will play either defending champion Croatia at home or Argentina in South America from Sept 22-24 in the penultimate round this year.
