Talking to media persons here on Wednesday, Khurshid said the success of the rally clearly reflected the electorate’s disenchantment with the performance of the SP-led government in the state. Formation of Jan Morcha by former Prime Minister VP Singh and SP dissident Raj Babbar and political front formed by Muslim leaders indicated that Mulayam Singh Yadav was worried about his political survival.
He made it clear the Congress was not invited to attend the rally but some of its leaders participated in their personal capacity.
Khurshid admitted there were differences over the reservation issue in the Congress also along with other political parties but no one was opposed against the concept of reservation but the opposition was over its structure.
The Union government has already formed an Oversight Committee to look into the design of the new reservation policy with the intention of safeguarding interests of a cross-section of society. After a thorough studies of all aspects related to the new reservation policy, it would be implemented.
Lashing at the SP, he said its minister, Azam Khan was hatching a conspiracy to remove the statue of Mahatma Gandhi from a crossing in the name of beautification at Rampur. The Congress had launched a stir over the issue. He said the Governor had directed the SP to take Congress leaders into confidence before any alteration with the statue site.
In response to a query over the removal of POTA and TADA by the UPA government, he said, the number of terrorist incidents had decreased with the removal of these hard laws.
