Sarni unit trips, power crisis looms

A 210-mega watt (mw) unit of Satpura Thermal Power Station, Sarni, Betul district, has gone kaput after the current transformer blew off late last night.

A 210-mega watt (mw) unit of Satpura Thermal Power Station, Sarni, Betul district, has gone kaput after the current transformer blew off late last night.

When the incident took place, some more units of the station interconnected with the collapsed unit tripped but were re-started in a few hours. With one unit still out of order at Satpura station, the power shortage has climbed over 1500 mw during the peak hours in MP.

Against the peak demand of . 5500 mw, the MPSEB was having some 3800 mw. It was meeting the demand but resorting to unscheduled power cuts in rural areas.
