Saturday sorrow: 11 dead in J&K accident

A bus fell into a stream in south Kashmir's Anantnag district killing 11 persons, including two children, and injuring 42 others.

A bus fell into a stream in south Kashmir's Anantnag district killing 11 persons, including two children, and injuring 42 others.

The bus, which was headed for Pahalgam, skidded off the road and fell into the Lidder stream at Langanbal, 80 km from Srinagar.

A police official said four passengers died on the spot. “Seven others succumbed to their injuries,” the official said.

As news about the accident spread, locals rushed to the spot to help the injured. The police and disaster response teams launched a massive rescue operation.

Kashmir divisional commissioner Asgar Hassan Samoon announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs 25,000 each to the next of kin of the deceased and R10,000 each to those seriously injured and Rs 5,000 to other injured.
