“It is with utmost humility and with some degree of freedom that I appeal to the powers-that-be in ‘Delhi pattinam’ (capital city) to protect the Tamils in Sri Lanka and establish peace by whatever feasible means,” Karunanidhi said.

The DMK chief said External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee should be immediately deputed to Colombo to make efforts to ensure a ceasefire there. He emphasised that the government “should come forward to end the prolonged sufferings” of the Lankan Tamils.

He also criticised some political parties in Tamil Nadu for “terming our humanitarian concerns for the Lankan Tamils as aimed at helping the militant group, LTTE”.
