SBI manager arrested for embezzling Rs 45 lakh

A manager of a State Bank of India branch in nearby Namakkal has been arrested for allegedly embezzling about Rs 45 lakh, police said on Saturday.

Thangaraj, 51, was arrested two days ago while withdrawing money from an automated teller machine in Paramakudi in Salem, police said.

Thangaraj had been reported missing since February 18 by his wife, said police, who added that SBI general manager Gnanasambandham lodged a complaint three days ago that the accused had gone missing with about Rs 45 lakh.

Gnanasambandham alleged that Thangaraj had absconded after embezzling bank funds set aside for educational loan, farmers loan etc, police said.

Thangaraj was produced on Saturday before the Namakal chief judicial magistrate, they said.
