The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed Punjab Government's appeal seeking cancellation of former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s anticipatory bail and said it would not permit political parties to convert the apex court into a football stadium for them.

The harsh observations were made when the Akali Dal-BJP combine government sought Singh’s police custody for 15 days in a corruption case. Even before senior advocate KK Venugopal could speak for the Punjab government, the bench of Justices AK Mathur and Markandeya Katju said the case smacked of political vendetta. Justice Mathur was more vocal.
“The law makers had anticipated the present scenario where political parties are simply getting cases registered against each other for vengeance. And, therefore, the provision of anticipatory bail was introduced by them,” he added.
