THE ANTI-RESERVATION agitation of undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Institute of Medical Sciences-Banaras Hindu University entered its 14th day on Sunday.
The medicos, along with students of some schools and coaching centres, took out a rally and performed ‘shram-daan’ at Madhuban Garden on the BHU campus on Sunday.
Students of different branches of the Sunbeam Group of Schools, St. John’s School, JRS and other coaching institutes took part in the rally which was taken out under the banner of the Resident Doctors Association (RDA). The rally was taken out from the venue of the relay hunger strike and culminated at Madhuban Garden.
The ongoing relay hunger strike by medical students entered the eighth day. Dr Nandini, Dr Prashant Singh, Dr Girish, Dr Anil Tripathi and Dr Vaibhav Pandey participated in a 48-hour relay hunger strike on the IMS premises.
“We are committed to continuing our anti-reservation agitation till the Union Government rolls back its decision to enhance reservation in premier academic institutes,” RDA general secretary Dr Mahesh P. Kate told the HT on Sunday.
A long banner signed by a cross-section people is also being prepared. It will be forwarded to President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The banner has slogans such as ‘Indians are only Indians and nothing else’, ‘Reservation is un-Indian’, ‘Death is better than reservation’, ‘Think Indian and stop thinking regional’ and `Reservation should be abolished’ etc.
Medical services at Sir Sunderlal Hospital in the BHU remained affected in view of the ongoing indefinite strike. Almost all the indoor wards wore a deserted look. The parallel Out Patient Department (OPD) of striking medicos was closed on account of Sunday.
Agitated medical students torched the effigy of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Amethi MP Rahul Gandhi and Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh on Saturday evening. A number of social, professional and political organisations, including the IMA, the Brahmin Hitkarini Sabha, the Manishi Parishad, the Bar Association and the Homeopathic Medical Association have extended their support to the ongoing agitation of medical students here.
