The Ferrari racer was sixth at the time behind Renault leader Fernando Alonso after 34 of the 57 laps.
Schumacher appeared to high side coming into turn 16 at the top of the home straight and his front wheel crumbled as it hit the retaining wall, sending the car across the track.
The German managed to steer the car to safety to the other side of the track and safely got out the car and back to the team garage.
