Scientists to wait for final legislation, says Kakodkar

“The Prime Minister has assured scientists that the agreement would not impact indigenous researches. Lets wait for the final legislation,” he told presspersons here today.
Giving his views, Professor M G K Menon told reporters that nuclear cooperation agreement should not restrict the basis of objective for researches and development that Indian scientists and technocrats want to undertake.
When told that although India could be proud of its forays into space and nuclear technology, it has lost race in research on semi conductors, Dr Kakodkar said research was on in that field. “But yes we could have done better,” he added. When told about the delays caused in starting radiation plant in Indore, he said it would be set up at RRCAT if the district administration doesn’t finalise land for the plant.
Responding to query on atomic power plants, Dr Kakodkar said that Department of Atomic Energy was focusing to augment the capacity of existing sites, as it involves less expenditure compared to installing the new ones.
He informed that there would be 700 MW of two plants each at Ravatbhata and Kakrapar while 1000 MW plants would be set up at Kudamkulan and Jaitpura (Maharashtra). He said that sites have been identified for eight new reactors.
To a query on reservation, he evaded a direct reply and said there is need to nurture excellence and provide equal opportunities for excellence to all.
