Former Hollywood "bad boy" Sean Penn, who made a career of tackling dark, grittier roles, won the best actor Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of a tortured, grieving father in "Mystic River."
The outspoken actor who has long spurned Hollywood's traditions, won the Academy Award with his fourth nomination, following nods for "Dead Man Walking," "Sweet and Lowdown" and "I Am Sam."
