SECURITY HAS been beefed up in sensitive localities in the wake of Holi with the administration holding a series of confidence- building measures on Monday.

Appeals to celebrate the festival in its true Awadhi spirit poured from all quarters as authorities here made last ditch effort to convince members of the Sonkar community to take back their decision not to celebrate Holi in the wake of recent riots. A peace march led by District Magistrate RN Tripathi, Naib Imam of Eidgah Maulana Khalid Rasheed and civil defense volunteers was taken out from Koneshwar Crossing in Chowk.

Likewise peace meetings were also held with members of both majority and minority community in Qaiserbagh, Aminabad, Moulviganj, Chowk and other sensitive localities. Officials have been asked to remain vigilant and ensure that there was no dispute over the selection of venue for lighting the Holi bonfire among the residents. A valuable bit of information for tipplers: liquor shops in the city would remain closed on March 15.

Apart from the heavy deployment of security personnel in areas that witnessed communal clashes, the authorities have requisitioned additional reinforcements for patrol duty in other parts of the city. According to reports 47-armed guards, 1500 homeguards, four companies of RAF and 17 companies of the PAC personnel have been deployed for law and order related duties in the State capital.
