ALLAHABAD UNIVERSITY'S Department of Music is going to organise a two-day seminar on the ‘Tradition of North Indian Classical Music' for research scholars of music from February 17.

Head of the Music and Performing Arts Department, Prof Swatantra Sharma said that the musical heritage of North India has some of its own distinctive features because the musicians, scholars and patrons of music have contributed immensely to the cause of classical music and also revealed the vastness and the wealth of their musical heritage to other States of the country. "North India has been the origin of most of the forms of Music like dhrupad, khayal, temple music, thumri, thappa, chaiti, hori, kajri and the kathak dance. Especially Gwalior, Agra, Jaunpur, Lucknow, Braj, Etawah, Varanasi, Rampur, Kirana, Jaipur, Patiala played vital role in giving birth to these classical forms and enriched the Indian classical music," she said.
Prof Sharma said that even eminent gharanas and schools of music, nurtured the true classical music during the British empire in North India and after Independence, the training of classical music has attained its heights via institutional teaching, Guru-Shishya Parampara and private institutions.
"But the present state of music training is deplorable and the talented musicians have to move to other places for reaching national stage. The government and the industrial class should come forward to nurture the treasure of classical music and support the upcoming artistes, only then the roots of our music will be saved," she added. The research scholars will present their papers on relevant themes and strengthen the cause of academics and performance during the two-day seminar. A research methodology workshop will also be organised on February 18.
