The benchmark Sensex, which gained nearly 110 points in early trading on Tuesday, shed most of its gains on profit-taking by funds and investors and still closed 14.78 points higher at 13,616.73.

The BSE-30 share index, which had lost over 170 points on Monday, staged a strong comeback to hit the session's high of 13,711.76 on the back of strong rally in most of heavyweight stocks, but profit-taking wiped-off early gains to close at 13,616.73 points. It also touched a low of 13,586.04.

In likewise manner, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty recovered by 6.45 points at 3,928.20 after moving between 3,952.40 and 3,920.00 points.

Cement, auto and metal sector stocks remained the centre of brisk activity during the session, helping Sensex to close in positive zone.
