Seven people were killed and 30 injured when a truck carrying a Baraat procession skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge in Udhampur, 70 km north of Jammu.

Reports said that a truck bearing registration No. JK02U 9885 carrying
a Baraat procession was on its way to Katra from Ramban when it
Skidded off the road at Kheri.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital in Udhampur. The condition of four of the injured is stated as critical. They were later shifted to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) Jammu.

Senior Superintendent of Police Udhampur PR Manhas told Hindustan
Times, "A truck carrying 37 members of a wedding procession skidded
Off the road and fell in a deep gorge in which seven people lost their
lives whereas 30 others were injured.

So far we've shifted four seriously injured people to Jammu for specialized treatment."

The truck driver was also killed in the accident. Road accidents are frequent in the area because of the hilly terrain and humpy bumpy roads, rash and drunken driving is also responsible for such mishaps in the area.

On January 6, a bus rolled down in Doda district of Jammu region killing and injuring dozens, which sparked off anger and resentment among the locals against the failure of the successive governments in ensuring proper road connectivity.

The incident had also caused a furore in the state Legislative Assembly in the current budget session, which was chalked earlier ahead of the new financial year.
