"The naxalites were killed in the jungles near Khodgaon village. Bodies of three naxalites have also been recovered," Ajay Yadav, Superintendent of Police (SP), Narayanpur told PTI.

The police have also recovered arms and ammunition including a 12 bore rifle, five loaded rifles and a tiffin bomb from the spot, he said.

A joint security team comprising district police, Chhattisgarh Armed Force (CAF) and Special Police Officers (SPOs) had gone for a regular security check up of the polling booths, Yadav said.

When the team reached the jungles in Narayanpur, about 300 kilometers from the state capital, naxalites started indiscriminate firing. In retaliatory fire by security personnels, seven naxalites were killed, he said.

One of the naxalites who was killed in the encounter is said to be of the deputy commander rank though it is yet to be authenticated, Yadav said.

Meanwhile, security arrangements have been put in place in all naxal affected districts in south Chattisgarh in view of the first phase of polling on November 14.
