Sex-for-marks: Accused in judicial custody

A court on Tuesday sent former registrar of Rani Durgavati University, Vijay Sharma to seven days’ judicial custody for alleged involvement in a sex-for-marks scandal that rocked a medical college here.

“Sharma was arrested on the basis of certain statements recorded during investigation of the case,” said S Shukla, additional SP (urban).

The scandal hit Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, affiliated to the university, following a complaint by Sandhu Arya, a student of MBBS, on February 17.

Arya said her senior, Prerna Atwal, had told her she would have to sleep with a man named Raju Khan if she wanted to get her marks increased in revaluation. Atwal also allegedly told Arya she had failed in two subjects, although the results were not declared.

Khan, believed to be the kingpin of the sex racket, was arrested on March 1 on the recommendation of a committee constituted to probe the case. He is currently in judicial custody.

The police also arrested the varsity’s controller of examination SS Rana and deputy registrar RS Kakodia. The two have been released on bail.
