According to sources, the Shatabdi was going to Dehradun when the stoning occurred. Before the train approached Modi Nagar station, at Sikri village a group of people started pelting stones at the train. Some stones hit and broke the windshield of the power cabin. A stone hit assistant driver Akram on his forehead.

The main driver, Babu Ram, escaped the stones by ducking under the driver's seat. Doctors attending on Akram at the Central Hospital in Delhi, where he was taken by a train, said he had hurt his left eye and his condition is serious.

After the incident, the driver somehow took the train to Modi Nagar station and parked it on a sidetrack. The Railway Police Force was informed and another power cabin called from Meerut. The train could proceed after two hours.
