A sharp shooter allegedly working for an Uttar Pradesh MLA, was today shot dead along with his aide in an encounter with police, a senior officer said here.
Raja Srivastava, who carried a cash reward of Rs 30,000, and his aide were killed in an encounter with police in Civil Lines areas this morning, Superintendent of Police Bhagwan Swaroop said.
Raja, who was wanted by UP and Bihar police in more than one dozen criminal cases, was a member of mafia turned politician Mukhtar Ansari gang.
The criminal killed a policeman in Chappra in Bihar and looted his pistol, which was also recovered today, the SP said.
Recently, Raja robbed two traders in the city and killed them, he added.
"We were tracking his movement through electronic surveillance from the last few days. Last night we were tipped off that Raja would be moving with one of his aides after which a trap was laid," he said.
Swaroop said in the wee hours police intercepted Raja, but he opened fire and was killed in retaliatory firing.
"Efforts are being made to identify another criminal killed in the encounter," he said.
