SI suspended for theft

A sub-inspector of UP Police, who was caught on CCTV stealing a mobile phone from a shop at RDC Rajnagar, was suspended on Sunday.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Prashant Kumar has also ordered an inquiry into the incident by the circle-officer. The errant cop was posted at the Kavi Nagar police station. Though the shop owner did not lodge an official complaint, the CCTV footage was aired by local news channels. The shop has remained shut since August 16, when the sub-inspector stole the phone.

"The incident has maligned the image of the police department. An inquiry is also under way. The CCTV footage has shown the SI involved in the alleged incident but we have to take his statement to reveal the facts," Kumar told Hindustan Times.
