THE UP government’s refusal to accept Centre’s proposed extension of ban on the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) comes at a time when the students’ body is more rejuvenated and stronger than earlier.
Be it the Varanasi serial blasts or the Shramjeevi Express explosion, the SIMI’s Ansars definitely played the key role to announce its return to Uttar Pradesh. Now, they represent Bangladesh’s Islamic Chhatra Shibir (ICS), serve the top militant organizations — mainly Harkatul Jehad Al Islami — through what its best at: Recruitment of youths.
Now, after Maharasthra, the SIMI has bared fangs in Uttar Pradesh with refined and multi-layered role to play. Top intelligence sources say the SIMI leaders in hibernation are operating under the cover of ICS in Central and Eastern UP to get a foothold. The sustained operations that followed the Varanasi blasts manifested this danger.
The prime conspirator, Waliullah, the Imam of Islamabad Mosque in Phulpur, was a SIMI Ansar (top cadre). He was arrested earlier in 2001— the year the ban was invoked — for being privy to anti-national activities. After he was released, the intelligence sources say, he never severed ties with the SIMIMI. For the Varanasi operation, Waliullah, in fact, received his orders from Bangladesh.
Even Zubair who executed the blood-ridden plan in the temple town and recently gunned down in the strife-torn Kashmir Valley, was a SIMI cadre.
Babu Bhai, the man behind the Shramjeevi Express blasts near Jaunpur, again was a SIMI Ansar who received training in one of ICS-run training camps in Ukhi.
Babu Bhai was recently handed over to UP police by the West Bengal police.
“SIMI is purely in operation in addition to recruitment of boys. The outfit is using its old network to achieve goals that include safe transportation of explosives, creating fund channels and safe houses,” says a source. For example, Waseemuddin Ansari of Kanpur arrested in Mumbai with C4 explosives and detonators is a SIMI old timer.Ansari, in fact, was given the explosives at the Kanpur Central station as the HuJAI changed plans to mount a serious attack on IIT-Kanpur. His arrest simply drove the security agencies to neutralise one of the biggest SIMI networks in Mahrashtra. The seizure of arms and ammunition in Malegaon, Aunrangabad an Mumbai city is linked to Ansari’s arrest.
In UP, the security agencies have identified Jaunpur, Allahabad, Kanpur, Lucknow, Ambedkar Nagar, Aligarh, Azamgarh, Sonauli, Ferozabad, Hathras where the SIMI cadres are recruiting boys for HuJAI in a big way. Monitoring the new innings are SIMI old timers like Mohd Aamir, Mohd Salman, Mohd Rehan, Shariq Fahim who are in Bangladesh for over three years.
