An accountant with the SNDT university in Santa Cruz was on Friday arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Mumbai while accepting Rs 5,000 from a retired lecturer.

Suresh Kumar Nair (42) had allegedly asked for the bribe from a lady lecturer to release her cheque of Rs 54,000. The lecturer had resigned in 2002 and was to get the cheque as her dues.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, ACB Mumbai, Vilas Tupe told HT that the lecturer had visited the accountant seven times to collect the cheque but could not get the same.

Besides, for the last about 15 days, Nair was demanding Rs 7,000 to release the cheque. However, the lecturer refused to give this amount following which Nair's demand came down to Rs 5,000.

However, she approached the ACB on Friday morning and lodged the complaint. In the evening, ACB officials laid a trap in the registrar's office of SNDT university where Nair was posted. The moment he accepted the amount, the officials arrested him.

Nair would be produced before the special anti-corruption court on Saturday.
