SO caught taking bribe from accused
THE CORRUPTION plaguing the police department was exposed during a special operation by the anti-corruption bureau in Kanpur on Thursday, when a station officer was caught taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 from an accused in a bomb explosion case. The anti-corruption bureau officials led by Deputy SP Netrapal Singh, caught Station Officer Chamanganj, Rahmatullah when he was taking the bribe from accused Suhail in a restaurant.
THE CORRUPTION plaguing the police department was exposed during a special operation by the anti-corruption bureau in Kanpur on Thursday, when a station officer was caught taking a bribe of Rs 5,000 from an accused in a bomb explosion case.
The anti-corruption bureau officials led by Deputy SP Netrapal Singh, caught Station Officer Chamanganj, Rahmatullah when he was taking the bribe from accused Suhail in a restaurant. In return for the money, the station officer had allegedly promised to remove the name of Suhail from the case . According to sources, Suhail had lodged a complaint regarding the bribe demanded by the station officer.
Rahmatullah was investigating an explosion that occurred on October 17 in which a person died. At that time, an FIR was lodged against unidentified persons but later during investigation, Rahmatullah named Suhail as one of the accused and sought a bribe of Rs 50,000 to exclude his name.
Suhail approached the anti-corruption bureau and acting upon his complaint, the bureau laid a trap today at the Little Chef restaurant at Civil Lines and instructed Suhail to call the inspector.
Aqeel, a friend of Suhail, contacted Rahmatullah and invited him to the restaurant to take the bribe and settle the case. Rahmatullah reached the restaurant and negotiated with Suhail on the bribe amount. The deal was settled at Rs 25,000 and Suhail handed over Rs 5,000 to Rahmatullah as the first instalment.
As Rahmatullah accepted the bribe, the officials caught him red handed. An FIR was lodged against Rahmatullah at the Kotwali police station.
However, Rahmatullah said that he was innocent and Suhail and others had framed him.
