Kapoor had been taken to Safdarjung Hospital for a check-up in the morning.

“While Kapoor was being escorted out of the orthopaedic department, he took out chilli powder from a pocket and threw it on assistant sub-inspector Umed Pal,” said H.G.S. Dhaliwal, deputy commissioner of police (south). “He then pulled his hand free and started running.”

By the time Pal gathered himself, Kapoor had covered about 200 metres. The policeman then fired three rounds at him.

“On hearing the commotion, two policemen who were nearby chased Kapoor and managed to catch him,” said Dhaliwal.

Vishwanathan was killed last September.
