Formation of a Third Force opposed to both the Congress and the BJP was announced on Thursday by the Samajwadi Party and the Telugu Desam Party.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has also hinted at a realignment of political forces at the national level after the Assembly polls.
The Samajwadi Party also issued a veiled threat to theCongress on continued support to the UPA coalition saying that it would have to think about the issue in the light of LK Advani's statement that BJP and Congress can make common cause in politics.
When asked if the Congress-led coalition at the Centre would last a full five-year term, Mulayam said, "Assembly elections in five states are underway. Wait till the outcome. Ask me the question after the results".
Yadav and Naidu said their parties, along with AIADMK, AGP and National Conference, would be working together to forge a national alternative through "long term understanding".
"We will work together with a clear cut agenda and long-term understanding", Naidu said, steering clear of questions as to who would lead the alternative.
