The police said Jageswar Majhi waylaid Snehalata Dhana, (15) and Sanjulata Dhana (13) of Turainiktimal in the forest routes and poured petrol on them before setting them on fire.

Oriya daily the Samaj reported that Majhi loved Snehalata but was hurt after she got engaged to another man.

The siblings were returning from the jungle after collecting forest produce.

On hearing their screams, villagers rushed to the spot and doused the flame but could not save the two orphan girls who were staying with their maternal uncle.

Sanjulata died on the spot and her elder sister, Snehalata, died of her burn injuries on way to the Ispat General Hospital at Rourkela.

According to police, the two girls had come along with their widowed mother to live at their uncle’s place in Tureiniktimal after their father had died a few years ago.

Majhi has been absconding after the incident, police said.
