He has contested the Lok Sabha polls on seven occassions and won four times in a row from Tanjavur since 1996. He contested the 1984, 1989 and 1991 Lok Sabha polls but lost all three times. He won in 1996, 1998, 1999 and now in 2004.

53-year-old Palanimanickam had his schooling and graduated in Tanjavur. He did his post graduation and also obtained his law degree from Chennai.

He has been an active member of the DMK from his youth and was a deputy secretary of the DMK's agriculture wing. He is presently a member of the party's legal wing.
