Some unidentified persons last night vandalised the statue of the leader in a park in Govindnagar area, Circle Officer Surendra Tiwari told PTI.

As news spread about the damaged statue people gathered there and demanded arrest of the accused leading to tension in the area, he said.

As a precautionary measure police personnel were deployed in the area, he said.

The vandalised part of the statute was recovered from the park, he said, adding a case has been registered against unknown persons in this regard.

Authorities have assured the locals that a new statue of Gandhi will be put at the same place on Friday itself.
