Status of research evokes concern

EMINENT CLINICAL scientist Dr Maharaj Kishan Bhan expressed concern over status of biomedical research in the country. Speaking at the 11th convocation of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday evening, Dr Bhan said lack of decision making affected output. ?Of 250 medical institutes, only 10 are worthwhile in biomedical research. The rest are not innovative. Institutes are churning out people who know things, other than treatment, better,? he said.

Speaking at the 11th convocation of Sanjay Gandhi Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences on Saturday evening, Dr Bhan said lack of decision making affected output.

“Of 250 medical institutes, only 10 are worthwhile in biomedical research. The rest are not innovative. Institutes are churning out people who know things, other than treatment, better,” he said.

He called upon students to uphold traditions where they were fruitful and break the same when they were hurdles in providing healthcare.

“India is on the threshold of changes, but we need useful changes.”

“In the last 10 years, expenses on child healthcare have gone up manifold, but there has not been even one per cent decline in mortality rate. In fact, mentorship has to be criticised for this,” he said. “I firmly believe that there should be a Biomedical Research Council in the country to decide on the line of research at institutes.”

“India stands before deficiency of micronutrients and genetic disorders. The time has come to stop import of knowledge. We need to translate information for our use,” Dr Bhan said.

Addressing students and those who were awarded degrees, Governor TV Rajeswar said that new doctors had an added responsibility, adding that they needed to upgrade patient care and also focus on the poor and the needy. “Do take out time for poor and needy to get their blessings. This will help you to go ahead in your work,” the Governor said.

Minister for Family Welfare Ahmed Hasan said that the government was willing to extend all help to PGI in terms of developing infrastructure and research. Dean of SGPGIMS Prof A Ayyagari gave the welcome address. A total 48 DM/MCh/PDCC and MD students and 3 PhD students were awarded degrees at the function. Six students were given the degrees in their absence.

The Prof SS Agrawal Award for ‘Excellence in Research for the Year 2005,’ for best published paper was awarded to Dr Marakani Venkata Kiran of Neurosurgery.
