Efforts are on to track down three other shooters belonging to the Shahamuddin gang. The State police had announced a reward of Rs 2 lakh for the police team if they cracked the case.

BJP leaders — Raju Samosewala, Raman Varshneya, OP Lala and BJP MLA DP Kuriel’s son — were gunned down between May 19 and 28 during the Aligarh riots. All the leaders were felled with a single shot in their heads.

The murders, which had created a sensation in the violence-torn district, were being investigated by the STF headed by Deputy SP Inderjeet Singh Teotia.

As the probe was on, Dr Mannan Wasanwala was kidnapped from his clinic in Sir Syed Nagar clinic. The STF was given the task to probe the abduction and its expertise in e-surveillance worked again. The STF team learnt about the Shahamuddin gang’s involvement in the kidnapping and it successfully cornered the gang leader at Atrauli.

After a brief encounter, the joint teams of the STF and the Aligarh police gunned down the leader and a gang member Maujuddin of Bulandshahr and rescued the doctor, STF sources said.

In addition, three shooters Alimuddin, Bhoora and Shamshad were arrested.

During interrogation, Shamshad spilled the beans about the murders of the BJP leaders.

He revealed that the leaders were executed by him and other shooters — Alimuddin, Bhoora, Lalu, Bunty, Umar and Chand — at the behest of Pervez, the Parcham Party chief.

Consequently, Pervez was picked up for questioning and he admitted that he had planned the murders.

On the basis of his information, police arrested Lalu, while Chand, Umar and Bunty are still at large.

They told the police since the BJP leaders were involved in arson and looting and were the most hated figures in the locality. Their riot-related activities were also available on the CDs, which are doing the rounds in and around Aligarh.
