DESPITE A fund of Rs 24.47 crore sanctioned by the Union Government, work on diversion and treatment of three major nullahs of Salori, Allenganj and Buxi bundh has not started yet.

Concern has been expressed over the lackadaisical approach of the administration as only some months are left for commencement of the Ardha Kumbh.

Kamlesh Singh, former corporator, has raised this issue through a letter to the district magistrate, who is also an administrator of Nagar Nigam these days.

In the letter, Singh raised several points regarding the delay in allocation of land for the treatment plant.

If the work on sewage treatment plant (STP) is not initiated soon, it would not be possible to complete it before Ardh Kumbh which is scheduled to be held in January next.

The sants, who had been already agitating on this issue Ganga pollution since starting of Magh Mela here, might boycott the bathing of Ardh Kumbh so the administration should wake up from its slumber and make available the land for STP at the earliest, opined the former corporator.

Singh said if 275 MLD used water was being released daily in Ganga and Yamuna rivers in the city, causing a heavy pollution in both rivers.

Meanwhile, general manager of the Ganga Action Plan V N Sharan has said out of 45 nullahs, 35 fall in Ganga and 11 in Yamuna.

The GAP was initiated here in 1985-86 under which six nullahs, including two on Ganga and four on Yamuna had been intercepted so far with a construction of eight sewage plants.

Besides, a sewage plant at Naini having a capacity of 60 MLD is already working there.

A sum of Rs 31.50 crore received under the GAP has already been spent on the work. Apart from this, a mega Rs 234.50 crore plan has been submitted to the Central Government for remaining work of interception, diversion and treatment plants of nullahs.

However, the Government had sanctioned the work on 24.47 on three nullahs at Salori, Allenganj and Buxi Bundh.

"The proceeding is under way to begin the work," said Sharan.
