On February 6, the Director of Kaziranga National Park received an emergency call from the Conservator of Forests, Western Assam Circle (Tezpur), that an adult tiger had strayed into Tezpur town on the bank of Brahmaputra River. It had killed one person and mauled two others, before taking shelter in a hut.
The Wildlife Trust of India-run Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation was immediately informed and the Centre's veterinarian Dr Bhaskar Choudhury was sent out for assistance along with Guwahati Zoo veterinarians.
The tiger was darted twice before the rescue team went in through the window to get to the tranquilised tiger. "We kept clapping our hands and throwing stones, and later, even poking it with a bamboo pole to make sure that it was unconscious. The tiger was an adult male approximately 12 to13 years old. It had minor bruises and cuts on the body. It was 9.6 feet long and weighed about 180 kg," he said.
Meanwhile, the truck from Kaziranga National Park carrying a transit crate for the tiger broke down halfway at a point from where the driver could not communicate with the rescue team.
