The strike call was preceded by a general meeting of the employees under the banner of Karamchari Sanyukt Sangh, where municipal commissioner Arvind Singh was flayed for paying no heed to their 34-point charter of demands. Sangh leaders claimed that they did not want to go on general strike but because of obstinacy of the municipal commissioner they had been forced to do so.
The strike call has put KMC officials in a tizzy as Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav is scheduled to visit the city on January 9 to attend a programme at Bithoor. Sangh leaders have also planned to draw the attention of the chief minister towards their long pending demands.
Sangh leaders Baburam Baghmar and Mohan Singh Yadav said the employees of the KMC had been deprived of three months salary despite grants being released by the State Finance Commission under the salary fund.
Sangh leaders also questioned the statement of chief account officer PN Singh that the grant released by the SFC had been deposited in the salary account.
They termed the statement false and claimed that, instead, the amount had been deposited in the contractors’ payment account.
The meeting was followed by gherao of the municipal commissioner and demanded immediate disbursement of their salary before the festival of Eid-ul-Zuha falling on January 11. However, not getting any positive response from the municipal commissioner, Sangh leaders gave a call for a general strike when no work would take place, specially in the engineering, horticulture, rubbish removal and sanitation departments of the KMC.
