Sharply reacting over the decision of vice-chancellor Prof Arun Kumar to postpone the election, students took out a procession and indulged in vandalism at different places in the city on Friday.

The agitated students damaged the windscreen of three roadways buses of Banda and Gorakhpur depot, tried to torch them and pelted stones at a tractor shop in Golghar. Then they took out a procession and tried to lock the offices in the university.

From there they went to the V-C’s residence and then finally reached the divisional commissioner’s officer where they handed over a memorandum demanding to conduct the election and to continue classes in the campus.

They also handed over a memorandum to the city magistrate and threatened if their demands were not met, they would intensify their agitation and call for a Gorakhpur bandh.

Earlier in the day, students also staged a dharna at the university gate in support of their demands.

Student leaders Shrikant Mishra, Rajkumar Rai, Ramesh Pathak and others accused varsity officials of adopting time-bound policies to avoid the union election.

Former president of the students union Ratan Pal Singh, Yogesh Singh, Vishwajeet Singh, Ashwani Kumar and others organised a meeting at the guest house on the university campus and demanded that fixation of age for the candidate should be determined before the filing of the nomination papers.

They also demanded to dissolve the outgoing students union and said a meeting of students’ leaders had been convened on Friday to discuss the future course of action.
