After their defeat against the West Indies, Australia badly needed a win in the do-or-die match against the islanders but things went terribly wrong last night and Ponting and his men made an early exit from the tournament.

"It was disappointing to lose the match. I cannot explain the reason for the defeat," a dejected Ponting said after the match.

Ponting felt his teammates committed too many mistakes and could not play the Lankan spinners, specially Ajantha Mendis, well.

"We knew we had to play the spinners well but didn't," he said.

"We committed too many mistakes in this match," rued Ponting.
