THE CITY police on Friday claimed to have nabbed the accused in the murder of an 11-year-old boy whose body was found lying in the forests of Amoni near Sukhi Sewania last month.
According to police, Anil, 11, son of Dhani Ram, resident of Ayodhya Nagar, was killed by a family friend, Ramesh, who felt that after Anil’s death he would wield more influence in the family of Dhani Ram and thus be able to get his 16-year-old daughter married to a man of his choice.
The accused, Ramesh, 35, resident of Kakda Basti, had reportedly assured a person that if the latter paid Rs 30,000 he would get him marry Dhani Ram’s daughter as per the ‘baithana’ custom prevalent in certain castes where the family of the bride demands money from prospective grooms in order to fix the marriage.
As Dhani Ram was not willing to marry off his daughter to a person of Ramesh’s choice, this angered the latter who along with a relative Pappu tried to ‘eliminate’ Dhani Ram. The duo allegedly wanted to take him away and kill him after serving him liquor but Dhani Ram did not go along with them.
Later the duo decided to ‘remove Anil from the scene’ as they thought they would then pretend to help Dhani Ram in searching for the boy and this would enhance their clout within Dhani Ram’s family.
The accused thought once they managed to wield more influence in the family matters they would be able to convince Dhani Ram to marry off his daughter to the person so that they could then make monitory gain. Ramesh and Pappu lured away the boy on December 12 and took him on a scooter to Amoni.
The duo then strangled him to death and abandoned the body. Pappu later left for his house in Bhainskheda while Ramesh pretended that he was sincerely looking for the lost child. The body was spotted on December 12 and identified the next day.
As police worked on the clues and reached closer to solving the case Ramesh also disappeared raising the suspicion on his role. Subsequently the duo was caught and during interrogation they confessed that they killed the boy.
