Support for a withdrawal of British troops from Iraq after the handover of power on June 30 is growing with 55 percent of Britons saying they want their troops out, a poll published by The Independent said Monday. In April an ICM survey had found that 51 percent of Britons were in favor of keeping British troops in the country for as long as necessary.

According to the latest poll, which quizzed people April30 - May 2, only 28 percent of respondents want British troops to stay in Iraq after June 30, Washington's target date for a handover of power to the Iraqis.
The survey was carried out as news broke that prisoners had been abused by US and British forces in Iraq.
Fifty-seven percent of women and 53 percent of men were now found to be opposed to any British military presence in Iraq.
