Five persons were injured when supporters of AIADMK Rajya Sabha member and comedian SS Chandran reportedly attacked them with aruvals (sickles) at Kallakurichi near here, when they protested against some 'derogatory' remarks made by him against DMK president M Karunanidhi.
Chandran was canvassing votes for S Rajasekaran (AIADMK) last night when the incident occurred. When members of the public protested, he reportedly asked his subordinates to beat them up and they were attacked with aruvals.
The injured have been admitted to the Mohan Kumaramanglam medical college hospital.
Congress candidate KV Thangabalu rushed to the hospital and also met city police commissioner, Sunil Kumar.
Meanwhile, local people squatted on the road in protest against the incident and refused to leave unless action was taken against the guilty. Following this, Sunil Kumar held talks and assured that action would be taken.
Two persons were arrested today in this connection. Police have also seized a cache of sickles and lathis. The duo were remanded to judicial custody under various sections of the IPC.
